Turkey – Final Thoughts

What We Are Listening To

For your listening enjoyment. I fell in love with this song when it came out on the radio at home, but hadn’t heard it in years. One evening, we were sitting in this tiny little indoor room of a restaurant in Goreme, having dinner in front of a wood burning stove and this song came on over the radio. And I fell in love with it all over again. And then I heard it three more times before we left Turkey. It reminds me so much of our time in Cappadocia. “Come along now, come along with me.”

My Final Thoughts

Turkey was a crazy time for the ‘ol Schwarz clan.

We were just learning how to get our travel legs under us. We were scared. We were overwhelmed. We were ecstatic. We were trepidatious and we were exuberant. We got scammed and we received the kindest hospitality we have known. We spent too much. We missed a lot. We saw and experienced some pretty amazing shit.

Cappadocia – Churches and Camels and Fairy Chimneys, oh my!

Cappadocia – Churches and Camels and Fairy Chimneys, oh my!

We left the Mediterranean coast on an overnight bus, leaving my beloved sea and were dropped off at 5 a.m. in the dark and the freezing cold. When the sun rose, we were greeted with this sight.

The Lycian Way – Romping Through Ancient History

The Lycian Way – Romping Through Ancient History

I was hoping that we would get to experience more of the Lycian Way, but after our mountain fiasco, we needed to pull way back and take it easy. We still got to explore some amazing places along this ancient trail and they captured me in a way nothing else on this trip has.

That One Time We Almost Died on a Mountain in Turkey

That One Time We Almost Died on a Mountain in Turkey

Ok. So here’s the thing. When this first happened, I completely downplayed the seriousness of the situation. I did this for two reasons. The first is that I didn’t want people at home to worry needlessly about us after the fact. The second is that I was deeply shell shocked and it took us a number of days to emotionally and physically assess the damage done. The truth is that we have never been in a situation more dangerous to our physical safety. Let me repeat that. We have never been in a situation more dangerous to our physical safety.

Sailing Away on the Magical Mediterranean

Sailing Away on the Magical Mediterranean

What We Are Listening To

We have decided to add a multi-media component to some of our posts going forward. So often, we are struck with songs/music that perfectly sum up how we are feeling about a situation in particular or our travels in general. Sometimes the song choice is random and silly, sometimes inspiring. Not every post will have a corresponding song, but if we have a song that we feel evokes the feeling of a particular post, we will share the link. You can listen to it before or after you read the post, during or not at all – it’s entirely up to you!

Here is the link for this post for your listening pleasure! Enjoy!

Sailing Away

We were all very much looking forward to our Mediterranean cruise. This was a splurge that I allowed myself to book as a consolation prize after we definitively decided that we would have to cut Africa from the itinerary. And after I had spent a couple of full days in tears. I had read about Captain Osman’s gulet (traditional Turkish boat) tours in a post on Ottsworld and I was sold from that very moment. I’m very impressionable when it comes to other people’s travel experiences apparently!
